2022 Movie #119. 1947. Young widow (Tierney) moves to a seaside cottage in 1900 to get away from her in-laws. The cottage is haunted by its former owner, Captain Gray (Harrison). Enjoyable romance. An 8-yo Natalie Wood makes an appearance. The b/w cinematography won an Oscar.

A widow is haunted by a sea captain.

2/4 (Indifferent).

The first half is pretty great. The second half is bafflingly awful. What kind of romantic comedy decides halfway through that it's going to try to be a serious melodrama instead? Why would you do that?

Roman revolution leads to civil war.

Not as good as the play; they cut out way too much. Although, what's there is done quite well. I enjoyed the first hour and a half or so quite a bit, but they chopped the ending to pieces.

A fan attaches herself to an aging actress.

There are probably only four or five actresses in the history of movies that could have taken Davis' character and made her sympathetic; Davis makes her downright lovable. Every now and then a movie like this, that I otherwise might never have seen, reminds me why I'm doing my IMDb's Top 250 project.
