A poignant, albeit sometimes light-hearted character-based drama involving three very different sisters. They get together in the days after their mother (Patricia Hodge) dies, sharing their rather different memories.

Rated 15 which is about right in my view; very well made, with a high profile cast, and some serious issued albeit with some amusing moments, and some rather silly ones.

We enjoyed it, despite the lack of any real plot.

Bogarde is highly watchable as a man who unfortunately kills his much older wife before she can change her will, but no matter, he's off to the races again with Lockwood, who gives a fine performance. Still, the script has its problems and becomes a bit over-melodramatic toward the end. The settings (Brighton and Bogarde's large house) are excellent, however, so this is far from a waste of time.

Alfie is interested in just about any woman, from the gorgeous Jane Asher to Shelley Winters (who hadn't quite evolved into the Poseidon Adventure Shelley Winters, but was well on her way.) Alfie manages to be likable and unlikeable at the same time, as his treatment of a fellow sanatorium patient and his wife show. The film, successfully, moves from outright comedy to some deeply serious moments featuring Alfie's relationships with Foster and Merchant. Highly recommended.… (more)
