I've been meaning to read this since it came out and I'm glad I've finally got to it! I finished it in two days and was surprised by some of the plot points so I think it's definitely worth the read even if it didn't match Ella Enchanted but really, what could?

I appreciated how the characters were multi-dimensional and not purely evil or good. The moments of Rapunzel were also an exciting touch. I wish there'd been more information on what happened to Willem when he fell from the tower. What I couldn't abide though was all the Barmarres with their constant "Beg your pardon"s. When Lord Tove was frustrated with it too he moved up in opinion of him! Just say what you have to say and stop begging pardons!!

I liked this retelling of Cinderella so much more as I read it with my kids. The emphasis is on standing up for yourself and learning the meaning of sacrificial love and true friendship. I think it’s a great improvement from the original story that it doesn't rely on a quick fairy godmother fix to solve every problem. Ella is clever and funny and is willing to try and solve her own problems. I love how her best friend Char knows who she truly is & loves her.

Very interesting ideas. I love Levine's reworking of classic fairy tales. This one fell a bit flat for me, especially towards the end. I wasn't sure what Peregrine's internal journey was supposed to be, and it made what was happening externally feel like A LOT. There were also a lot of moving parts in this one, which made the ending feel like one big event after another. I love the ideas, I just think the execution wasn't quite on par with some of her other work.
