Despite the title, this book is not going to put anyone to sleep! The boy is given the warning "Ten minutes till bedtime!" just as a tour of hamsters comes traipsing through the boy's bedroom. Hijinks ensue, much silliness happens, and the reader wonders if the boy will ever be able to make his deadline. At the last minute, the hamsters are off and the boy gets to bed.
Young readers will enjoy the boy's confusion, the father's obliviousness, and the gorilla from "Good Night, Gorilla" popping up in the book.
This is a good book to have young children practice 'reading' the illustrations and predict what might happen next. It's also a good book for talking about the illustrations - is this real or silly? Where did all those hamsters come from? Where do they go after the tour? Why doesn't the father see them?
