Most stories about King Arthur’s wife, Queen Guinevere, involve her infamous affair with Lancelot. Few go into other aspects of her life, and fewer still into her life before Arthur. This picture book is one of the latter type, looking at Guinevere from her early childhood right up to the point where she is about to marry Arthur. The author chronicles a number of events in Guinevere’s life, showing her as a bold adventurer worthy of loving a man equally bold. The book is presented with text on the left page along with a small illustration while the right page is completely covered with illustration. This book is one of the rare cases where the illustrations match the text with exacting detail. These illustrations are vibrant, finely executed works of art. I have to say that while the story was what initially appealed to me, the illustrations completely stole the day. A+ for the illustrations, and probably a B- for the text. ( )

The young Guinevere learns the ways of the magical woods outside her father's castle and is called upon to save the day when war arrives. I would have loved this when I was a child. ( )
