First book in a series that I started with my daughter. I love the way the author handles trials in Ryan’s friendships, and frustrations about moving to a new home. She and her brother often pick on each other, but they have each other’s backs when it matters. I love how encouraging her parents are and the ways that the family connects through traditions. We’re definitely reading the next book in the series. ( )

The Story:

This is a slice of life from a Portland family. Ryan tries to live up to the meaning of her name while navigating life as a 4th grader. She’s not perfect but she is open and willing to learn from her mistakes.

The Random Thoughts:

I’m really glad the ban partition did not pass. Also, I saw none of the accusations for banning as I read the book. I’d like to see the original proposal but I’m not quite that invested. ( )
