The main idea of the text is to inform the reader about little brown bats and their life cycle. Little brown bats are nocturnal and have a life span of more than thirty-years. When they are born, little brown bats are called pups. After three weeks the pups begin to fly and explore the world outside. The story contains a visual representation of the bats wings in order to show the reader how the wing structure is similar to a human hand. Bats have eyes that allow them to see in dim light, but their ability to “see” with their ears is prominent. Brown bats use echolocation in order to hunt for their prey. In one hour a bat can eat more than six hundred bugs. When bats go into hibernation their heartbeats slow and their body temperatures fall to just above freezing. They live off of fat stored in their body. When the springtime approaches the bats begin to stir and their heartbeats become faster and their breathing quickens. ( )

This text has rich information on bats. It might not be a great teaching tool for a kid as it does not have much good literacy elements of an effective informative text such as table of contents, bold words, subtitle, and glossary. It is still a good book to help students know more about bats. ( )

This is an illustrated book that talks about the life of a Little Brown Bat. I also incoprorated this into my first grade science lesson. The students enjoyed seeing other depictions of how a baby "pup" is born and how the mother takes care of their baby until they can be on their own. This is another very informative book to include in a classroom library. ( )
