Caraval was a book I’ve wanted to get my hands on ever since COVID started and recently I managed to get a hold of my library copy. It was genuinely worth the read even though I currently have no plans on touching the second book. The unexpected twists near the end was absolutely unexpected. Don’t google anything about this book (like I did) because being unspoiled of the ending is a good wait. The magic of the isle was shown beautifully. I can’t tell which leaked intelligence faster, this book or its heroine. Because legend has it… Scarlett is the literal worst. There was a story somewhere in there, or at least the idea of one. But Caraval is so poorly written that it never got to grow into something decent. The “twists” continued to undo any progress previously made. And did I mention that Scarlett may be missing usable brain cells? That’s 0 & 2 for the Stephanie Garber reads for me. I think I can move on and accept I don’t need to try any more. no reviews | add a review

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their ruthless father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the legendary, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year, Scarlett's long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor who she has just met, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever. Who can you trust when everyone is playing a game to win?
Enter into the world of Caraval, where the magic will spin you around in a dance of madness only to leave your jaw on the floor in the end.
Who can fix this?
I must get the next installment to continue to watch the story unfold as I love these main characters, the villains, the players and the performers.
This one will stay a while in my heart and in my mind. ( )
