A little spooky, but not horror, this books is full of friendship and adventure. The main character is half Jumbie, and the themes of us vs them and distrust of other communities is a wonderful addition that runs throughout the story. This would make a good read-alike for Riordan fans, as it has magic and adventure, and friends working together. The writing is very good, but simple enough to make the books run very smooth. ( )

A retelling of The Magic Orange Tree story for, I think?, a middle grade audience? At any rate, it was a fun, quick read. ( )

DNF @ 127pages or 55%.

I’m glad this book exists because the Caribbean folklore was interesting, but I just felt bored most of the time I was reading. Just not for me.

Great for kids who like scary stories, old-school style fairy tales, and adventure. It introduces readers to Caribbean culture, language, and folktales and features a cast of courageous, adventurous non-white kids. #WeNeedDiverseBooks

Note: I received an ARC from the publisher. ( )

I enjoyed this young person's book, good story, strong characters, built on folklore from the Caribbean. ( )

Book description
Corinne La Mer claims she isn’t afraid of anything. Not scorpions, not the boys who tease her, and certainly not jumbies. They’re just tricksters made up by parents to frighten their children. Then one night Corinne chases an agouti all the way into the forbidden forest, and shining yellow eyes follow her to the edge of the trees. They couldn’t belong to a jumbie. Or could they?
