This book was about a young boy named Willard. He lived on a farm with his mother and father. He went to school and helped his dad with the chores on the farm. They both loved baseball and loved Babe Ruth. One day while attending to the farm animals, they were crossing the road with sheep, and a roadster comes flying down the road. Willard and his father waved to stop the man and he got stuck in the ditch. It turns out that the driver was Babe Ruth. Babe gave the boy a baseball mit and they helped him out of the ditch. A while later Willard and his father had the oppurtunity to go to a baseball game that Ruth was playing in. They walked down to where he was warming up and Babe gave him a ball. The books goes on and Willard grows up and has a daughter of his own, they name her Ruth. When Ruth was ten years old Willard and her grandfather took her to see Babe Ruth play. They happened to run into him and he signed her scorecard.

I enjoyed this book even though I'm not a huge baseball fan. It was a very sweet story about a boy who loved baseball. It also talked a little about the war and politics in a very subtle way.

In the classroom I could use this book to discuss baseball, farmlife, or even the war. I could have the kids do a show and tell (in the book the boy brought the glove that Babe gave him to school everyday, until the teacher asked him not to).
