La vida de Ray Charles es una alternancia de triunfos y fracasos personales que se suceden a lo largo de una dilatada carrera en el mundo del espectáculo. Ray era un hombre capaz de fundir con enorme eficacia los más diversos estilos musicales: el jazz, el rhythm & blues, el rock & roll, el gospel y el country. La película se centra en el período más explosivo de la carrera de Charles, que comienza cuando este joven negro y ciego se sube solo a un autobús en Florida y cruza el país para ir a parar a la floreciente escena jazzística de Seattle.
