Unstaring a topic in a group

I had starred a topic in a group and then. Unstarred it by tapping on the x at the right. Now it appears to have disappeared altogether. What does unstaring actually do, and how can I find that topic now?

You didn't unstar it, you ignored it (clicked the X). Look on the left, you should have an "Ignored Topics" option under "More". From there you can restore the thread and/or unstar it.

Sure.

Over on the right, you should see "Unstar this topic" (in the same place where "star this topic" was before you did that, and just above "Ignore this topic").

I only see an x in a gray circle on the right

If you're in a list of topics (group page or talk page), the star is on the left. You can click on it to star or unstar.
