"The Mighty Mississippi: The Life and Times of America's Greatest River" by Linda Vieira is a nonfiction story that follows the history of the Mississippi River from 14,000 BCE to today. The author begins by given a detail account on how the river came to be formed from glaciers and then continues with information about how the rivers has seen wars, floods, slavery, and other historical events. It provides a timeline at the top of each page that progresses as the readers reads throughout the story. Towards the end of the book there is a shift where the story is no longer focused on the historical ties of the Mississippi River but the natural connections in terms of wildlife and preservation of the river. It is not an overly scholarly book since there is no bibliography or reference page. Overall it is a informative and gives a historical account of the river.… (more)

Audience: 5-8th grades
This is a great book about Mississippi river that has great photographs. It has a New Orleans focus and is a great local point of view that can be introduced to older students while reading about rivers and geography.
