Very surprising, innovative graphic narration of September 11th by eyewitness Spiegelman, author of award-winning MAUS. The book is enormous, literally and figuratively, and I found the author's obsession with one particular image of the towers--his rendering of it appears on almost every page--haunting. Unlike MAUS, SHADOW is full color, with a frantic and scattered pacing. The book is printed on World Trade Center-sized, thick posterboard paper (as if Spiegelman needed his story to last, since the towers didn't). SHADOW also includes a discussion of the history of comics, circa late 1800s, and how they influenced/recorded politics and societal mores. Appended are several plates that illustrate Spiegelman's comics essay.

Highly recommended for lovers of graphic novels, historians, and democrats--or anyone disheartened by America's sharp ethical decline since the Bush administration took office.

This book is good for students at an advanced level. It tells the story of someone who went through the Holocaust and shows how people survived during that time in history. People from different countries are represented as various animals. For example, Jews are portrayed as mice, and Nazis are portrayed as predatory cats. I would introduce this book to my classroom as a read-aloud to guide and help my students through the important themes and contexts throughout this story.

This is the second book that Art Spiegelman wrote. It follows the story of the first one where Art's father, Vladek, recounts his experience in the holocaust. The second book goes through more of how Vladek survived in Auschwitz. The story also builds on Art's relationship with his father and relating a lot of the things he does to surviving the holocaust. I would use this book in a high school classroom because it has more language and more mature themes than the first book. (135 pages).
