A Newbery Award Winner, The poems resound with the pulse of the cicada and the drone of the honeybee. They can be fully appreciated by an individual reader, but they're particularly striking when read aloud by two voices, making this an ideal pick for classroom use. Eric Beddows′s vibrant drawings send each insect soaring, spinning, or creeping off the page in its own unique way.

This didn't come together in a very satisfying way for me, but it is definitely useful in sparking a discussion about what the Civil War meant to people who were alive at the time. (Hint: Many of them did not really care about whether slavery remained legal.) It's also a quick read, and I'll forgive a lot for a book that doesn't take forever to get through.… (more)
